Benzethonium chloride is an antimicrobial ("anti-germ") preservative.
Benzethonium chloride is also used in other medications, including
injections, creams, and eardrops.
Preservatives prevent contamination of multi-dose vaccine containers.
Many vaccines and other medications are packaged in multi-dose vials.
Without preservatives, vials could be contaminated when needles enter the vial.
