FDA permits small amounts of formaldehyde in several vaccines, including tetanus toxoid.

With formaldehyde as a stabilizer, the vaccine has a longer shelf-life (i.e., expiration date).

Formaldehyde has been used to manufacture many vaccines since the 1960s.
